What Happened

United announced on October 15, 2026 that its Switch to Better Wi-Fi status match campaign will run to October 22. The campaign had been set to end October 15. United said the extension adds one week and follows strong demand in the first two weeks of the offer.

The campaign launched on October 1. It is open to eligible Delta SkyMiles and American AAdvantage members. Approved members can earn United Premier status through January 2028 if they meet the spending requirement for their tier and take a United or United Express flight within 90 days.

United reported that applications under this campaign are 275 percent higher than pre-campaign levels, and that daily applications rose by a factor of ten. The largest volumes came from New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, followed by Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Chicago. Those figures are United's own reporting in its release.

The same announcement covered United's Starlink Wi-Fi rollout. Starlink is active on more than 635 United mainline and United Express aircraft, on nearly half of daily departures, and United plans to finish installations by the end of 2027. A new tracker at StarlinkTracker.United.com shows whether a flight within three days of departure is scheduled to have Starlink. The Wi-Fi rollout is the context for the match offer. It does not change MileagePlus earning or redemption rules.

What It Means for Members

Delta and American elites who missed the first deadline: the decision is open again for one week. Nothing about the challenge itself changed in the release. The tiers, the spending amounts, the 90-day window and the January 2028 end date for completed matches are the same as at launch.

Delta and American elites who already applied: the extension does not change a challenge already in progress. The 90-day window and spending requirement tied to the original approval still control.

United Premier members: a larger matched cohort will compete for the same upgrade and priority inventory through January 2028 if these members complete their challenges. The size of that effect depends on how many applicants finish the spending requirement, which United has not published.

MileagePlus members with no elite status elsewhere: this campaign does not apply. It is a match for holders of Delta or American elite status, not a general enrollment offer.

What to Do Now

  1. Apply by October 22, 2026 if a United match is wanted. Do not wait for the final day, because the release does not state a closing time or timezone.
  2. Check eligibility on the offer page before applying, including which Delta and American tiers map to which Premier tier and what proof of status United accepts.
  3. Plan the 90 days before applying, not after. A completed match requires both the tier spending amount ($1,500 to $7,000) and a United or United Express flight in that window.
  4. Count only United flying that is likely to happen anyway. Status through January 2028 has value only on flights actually taken on United in that period.

What Is Not Known Yet

  • The closing time and timezone for the October 22 deadline. United's release gives the date only.
  • How many applicants have completed, or will complete, the spending requirement. United published application volume increases, not completion numbers.
  • Whether PlusPoints are part of this extended campaign's completion awards. The October 15 release does not mention PlusPoints. Earlier reporting on the original campaign listed PlusPoints for Platinum and 1K completers, and that point should be confirmed on the offer terms page before relying on it.
  • Whether United will extend the campaign again. No further extension has been announced.

Loyalist Take

The one-week extension is likely just a way for United to keep themselves in the headlines for their smear campaign against Delta - albeit quite successful. The spending amount is still steep, and markedly harder than the regular status match. It really only benefits loyalty fliers who have unsuccessfully completed a status match within the last few years and need another status match opportunity before their three year renewal.
