UpgradeSuite, with a suite upgrade awardRoomStandard room (points, 12,000/night) → Regency SuiteBreakfastBuffet onlyLoungeGivenWelcome amenityGiven
A Globalist booked two rooms in December for a Birmingham Christmas markets trip with his in-laws: one room on points at the Category 3 standard rate of 12,000 per night (24,000 total, against a $275 cash rate) and the other on Category 1-4 free night certificates. He applied an expiring suite upgrade award to the points room to confirm the Regency Suite, which was selling for $741 per night; no extra suite was available at check-in for the second room, though one might have freed up later. Globalist benefits covered breakfast for two in the Aria restaurant, a buffet with made-to-order items, access to the 22nd-floor Club Lounge with evening food and self-serve beer and wine, and free parking on the award stay, normally £27 per day in a very small lot. Two bottles of water, two cans of flavoured sparkling water and a tiny cake square were the welcome amenity, and he said he would definitely return.

UpgradeNoneRoomClub room (cash, £14/night premium over Standard room) → Club room, 22nd floor (same configuration as a Standard King)BreakfastBuffet onlyLoungeGiven
An Explorist working toward a Globalist challenge stayed a few days to visit a friend, taking a complimentary third-night offer and paying a £14 per night premium to book a Club room for its included breakfast and Regency Club access. The hotel would not upgrade him further to a suite even though one was available, and his 22nd-floor room had the same configuration as a Standard King with plain, dated decor. Breakfast was a self-service buffet in the main restaurant with a spread he found not great, and the cappuccino machine was broken. The duplex Regency Club on the 22nd floor offered refreshments through the day and an evening happy hour with canapes, desserts and beer and wine, and the spa was the highlight of a mostly enjoyable stay.
