Nightly Upgrade Awards were pulled two days out, but the beachside plunge-pool villa came free anyway. Outstanding service, disappointing food and grounds.

    UpgradeNone

A guest reported no upgrade and being assigned what they described as the worst room, paying about $1,400 for a room they felt was worth $500 at most. They described the property as run down, with missing tile and rot at the oasis pool, a torn and sagging tennis net, a stinking lagoon, pests including cockroaches and indoor centipedes, curtain-less showers with gritty water, watered-down drinks, $50-per-couple upcharges on excursions, and ineffective management, and said they would not consider it luxurious.

A guest who said they were not Platinum reported being upgraded from a Superior Villa to a Deluxe villa, without specifying whether it was the Island or Otemanu Deluxe type, and noted that Deluxe villas allow a view of the mountain from the deck. On that basis they advised another traveller not to pay about $500 extra over four nights to pre-book the Deluxe category, since an upgrade was possible even without Platinum status.

A Gold member stayed four nights booked through Amex Travel in August 2017 and received the deluxe Otemanu-view overwater villa exactly as reserved, with no upgrade beyond the booked type. The Amex rate bundled 10 a.m. early check-in, daily breakfast (noted as valuable because the guest held Gold rather than Platinum), a $100 food-and-beverage or spa credit, a fourth-night-free promotion that made the rate a full night cheaper than booking direct, and a guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout that was extended to 6 p.m. A complimentary bottle of champagne was provided, loyalty points still posted despite the third-party booking, and the guest praised the room's condition and the friendly staff.

UpgradeTwo-bedroom suiteRoomDeluxe overwater villa → 2-bedroom Royal overwater villa with private pool

A Platinum member recalled a 2012 stay booked in the lowest-category overwater bungalow, believed to be the Deluxe type, and being upgraded to the two-bedroom Royal overwater bungalow with a private pool. They called it a once-in-a-lifetime upgrade they would not expect to repeat, noted that such upgrades depend on the hotel's occupancy at the time, and cautioned that post-merger reports suggested generous upgrades at the property were becoming far less common.
